The name derives from the appearance of the split green mark on the tip of one of the inner segments which looks like the footprint of a cloven deer hoof. Whilst desirable, not every flower displays this feature every year. This is a normal characteristic of the clone. In some years, or on some plants, the green marks fuse into one. The next year the same plant is “normal” with a cloven mark. The slot is frequently (usually even) only displayed on one segment, so some flowers have separate and joined marks on different faces of the same bloom.
Planting and Cultivation: Prepare your site by digging it over and adding some organic material such as leaf mould or well made garden compost together with a dusting of Bonemeal. If the soil is heavy add some grit at the time of planting to help with drainage. After planting the bulbs, give them a good watering to settle them in.
Over a period of time as Snowdrops naturalise to create a wonderful show. However clumps that become overcrowded over a period of time can affect flowering. They can be divided to thin them out, when dormant, every five years; excess bulbs could always be used in other parts of the garden.
